High Kirk Community Playgroup is based in Ballymena and provides a quality learning environment for the pre-school child. The sessions starts at 9:10am and ends 12:10pm, Monday to Friday.

Our blog regularly shares updates about what the children in the playgroup are up to. Here they are showing off some of their recent awards and certificates.

At High Kirk Community Playgroup we love seeing each child develop at their own rate as they grow in confidence.

With us the children learn to express themselves and be creative through many different areas of the curriculum – including role play, books, drama, singing, music, science and the natural world. Above all, we aim for all our children to have fun at playgroup for it is then that they learn most effectively.

We are registered with Homefirst and Early Years: The Organisation for young children, and we offer funded pre-school places for children in their immediate pre-school year. This is part of the Pre-school Education Expansion Programme provided by the Department of Education. We also provide private fee paying places.

The staff in the playgroup are fully qualified and specialise in pre-school education and the implementation of the Pre-School Curriculum. Our adult:child ratio is 1:8.

Fun in the Snow at High Kirk Community Playgroup. In Ballymena we have had more than our fair share of snow this winter. Hopefully things will get more springlike soon and we are looking forward to some warmer brighter days.

The snow isn’t enough to keep our children from getting outside. Here are some photographs of what we get up to out and about even when it has snowed. Fun in the Snow at High Kirk Community Playgroup

As you can see the snow didn’t keep us from learning and playing together. We just get wrapped up in our coats, scarves and gloves.

Learning is at the centre of all that we do here at High Kirk Community Playgroup in Ballymena. All our staff provide a carefully planned and structured learning environment, in line with Department of Education guidelines. Coming to playgroup helps children learn how to develop relationships and respect for other children and adults. It builds confidence, independence and self-discipline to enable them to make their own choices. We encourage all children to develop at their own rate through stimulating, progressive play. They learn to express themselves and be creative through many different areas of the curriculum – e.g. role play, books, drama, singing, music, science and the natural world.

Above all, we aim for all our children to have fun at playgroup for it is then that they learn most effectively. Stay tuned to see more of the activities planned for the children who attend High Kirk Community Playgroup.

High Kirk Community Playgroup will be holding an open day on Wednesday 15th November between 1pm-2pm. Please come down and see us!

World Book Day was held on the 3rd March and here at High Kirk Community Playgroup in Ballymena we invited lots of incredible characters to our playgroup. All the children were encouraged to dress up as their favourite character from a story book. Just have a look below:

We had some handsome princes, princesses, a gruffalo, a hungry caterpillar, and lots more amazing characters. On World Book Day all of the children are given a £1 voucher which they can exchange for a free book encouraging them to enjoy reading from a very early age. At High Kirk Playgroup we see this as very important and the children here absolutely love story time! The World Book Day books which we would recommend for pre-schoolers are Kipper’s Visit and Supertato. Well done to all the children who dressed up and to all the parents who helped them with their wonderful costumes.

If you would like to find out more about World Book Day please click here to view the website and click here to visit the High Kirk Playgroup homepage.

In February our theme at High Kirk Playgroup was “People who help us”. We enjoyed learning about people who have different jobs and even had a go ourselves. Here we are running our own Dental surgery – “Say Ahhh”!

Then we enjoyed a few visits from people who serve our community.

The police came in a white police van to tell us about their jobs. We even got the chance to try on their some of their uniform and sit in the back of the van – we are glad that the police didn’t lock us in!

On a different day the Fire Brigade turned up. There wasn’t a fire at playgroup but the Fire Service were there to show us the Fire Engine and all of their equipment which they use for their job.

We all enjoyed meeting people who have jobs which help others and had lots of fun dressing up and trying out the professional equipment. Over the next few months we look forward to more educational fun where we will learn about lots of different sports and start to talk about moving to school in September.

Happy Christmas

December 16, 2014

High Kirk Community Playgroup would like to wish a Happy Christmas and peaceful New Year to all our kids, parents, friends and family. Thank you for all your support and help with our playgroup.

We hope that you all have your Christmas lists ready and posted off to Santa and that you have a brilliant holiday season. See you in 2015!!

High Kirk Community Playgroup started a new session in September and by now the children are well and truly settled in. Starting playgroup can be a distressing time for both children and parents because of the unknown. Here at High Kirk Community Playgroup we do our very best to make sure that all the children are involved in fun activities and encouraged to play and learn together.

Children are sometimes wary of new people and strange surroundings but after a few weeks most children settle down into their new routine. They know what to expect and now look forward to coming in and seeing what is in store for them!

We are delighted to see this new group of children settle in so well and look forward to lots of fun and learning this year at High Kirk community playgroup.

The Staff of High Kirk Community Playgroup offer you and you children a warm welcome to this new term. We aim to provide a warm, friendly, fun and educational experience for each child attending our playgroup. We know that the first month at play group can be daunting for both child and their parents and carers but at High Kirk Playgroup we will support you and your child through these first few weeks. During September your child’s daily sessions are for a shorter period of time. Previous experience indicates that the shorter sessions helps to build the children’s confidence in entering the playroom without being separated from their parent/carer for too long. This gradual build up to the full session is less daunting for your child as well as less tiring.

Each month your child will be sent home one of each to ensure you are provided with information regarding the theme for the month, visitors and outings and to give you an insight into their learning for the month.

For September our colour is Blue and our shape is a Circle.

Our Blue Interest Table features a safe item from your child which is blue. This can be a fun activity for you at home whilst reinforcing or introducing the colour blue to your child. Please have your child’s name clearly marked on their contribution to make sure it goes home with the right person!

We also have a Nature table which is always a big hit with the children and we love the kids to contribute to our nature table from outings, trips to the park or your own back garden. Items of interest can open up discussions, promote language and, for those children who contribute, it aids their self-esteem and encourages links between home and playgroup. Twigs, flowers and leaves are all perfect for our Nature table.

We look forward to working alongside you and your child this year at High Kirk Community Playgroup.

Last month all the children at High Kirk Community Playgroup celebrated the arrival of the Giro d’Italia in Ballymena. The famous bike race passed through on a wet weekend but the children in the playgroup had fun on their bicycles wearing the trademark pink.

We think that all the kids looked great in the pink outfits and we can’t wait to see them cycling around when they get their stabilisers off! The children also had get fun where some animals visited for our Party Animals day.

The children in the playgroup got to meet lots of creatures and critters including this big bunny rabbit and this impressive snail. The children always enjoy a visit especially if it means meeting and learning about new animals. It has been wonderful to see the kids at High Kirk Playgroup learn through having fun.
